Jameson & Mackay Background
Founded in Perth 1881 Jameson & Mackay is the oldest legal firm in Perth to retain its original name. The founder was Melville Jameson, the son of Andrew Jameson who was for 50 years the Sheriff Substitute for the County of Fife. Melville Jameson began his legal practice with the firm of Gray and Jameson in 1837 but subsequently practiced alone until being joined in 1881 by Donald Manson Mackay, at which time the current firm of Jameson & Mackay was founded.
The firm initially had offices in County Buildings, Perth and moved to the present main office at 1, Charlotte Street in 1900. The last partner descended from the original members was Andrew Mackay who was senior partner of the firm until his death in 1969.
The building 1 Charlotte Street is a notable local building. The street itself was completed in 1783 as a new access to the Perth Bridge and the office has a prominent position in the town being adjacent to the Bridge and looking down George Street. The building is late 18th century, now B listed, with a corinthian columned doorpiece, an elegant frieze with swags over the windows and end pilasters and angle urns.
Further afield we have an office at 71 High Street, Auchterarder, a busy town some 12 miles west of Perth, famous as the home of The Gleneagles Hotel. This office provides a full time legal service to the Auchterarder community as well as extending our Estate Agency departments into that area. The Auchterarder office is run by our consultant, John Buchan.
Jameson & Mackay has also established fully customised estate agency premises at 58-60 George Street in Perth, a busy central location.
