Moving Home

A useful checklist of things to do before and on the day of the move

The day of the move is usually on the date of entry agreed with the seller or shortly thereafter. If you are moving on the date of entry it is very important to check that the keys will be available when you need them to avoid your removal van arriving before the sellers have moved out.

There is a lot to organise so it makes sense to start planning the move as early as possible. Below you'll find a checklist of things to do 4 weeks before the move, one week before and on the day. The timescales are not strict but give an idea of what needs to be done first and what can be safely left till later.

Above all don't try to do more than you reasonably can handle in the time available.

4 weeks to go

  • If you are in rented accommodation give written notice to your landlord
  • Arrange for gas, electricity, phone etc final readings on the day you are to move out
  • Collect quotes from removal firms or van hire companies and check their availability on the day of your move
  • Start compiling a list for your change of address cards in the next section
  • If you are moving to a new area start looking for doctors and dentists, and inform your existing ones that you are leaving.

1 week to go

  • Settle milk and paper bills
  • Confirm dates and times for final meter readings, for present home
  • Confirm supplies for the new house for electricity, gas, phone
  • If you have pets arrange for someone to look after them on the day of the move
  • Confirm where you will collect the keys and at what time
  • Send off your change of address cards
  • Arrange for your mail to be redirected

On the day

On the day of the move you'll be fully involved in the actual process to take care of many other things, but here is a list of useful things to keep handy and easily accessible

  • For a break: kettle, mugs, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits
  • For hygiene: loo paper, hand towel, soap, disinfectant
  • For cleanliness: washing up bowl, detergent, tea towels, rubber gloves, dustpan and brush, vacuum cleaner, cloths, bin liners.
  • For comfort: something to sit on and sleep in
  • For emergencies: fuses and fuse wire, basic tool kit, torch, candles, light bulbs, mathches
  • For peace of mind: the phone numbers of anyone you may need to contact during the day.
